We Put Patients First
"Patient First: It’s About Time" was developed in 2002 to help us meet the needs of our patients. The Patient First program consists of seven behaviors designed to ensure that:

  • Patients are included in decisions about their treatment
  • Staff has addressed their patents emotional and spiritual needs
  • Prompt response to concerns and complaints
  • Staff is sensitive to the inconvenience of hospitalization
  • Wait times for tests and treatments are addressed
  • Nurses keep patients informed

The seven behaviors of "Patient First: It’s About Time" are:

  • Make the Time: After each interaction, ask, "Is there anything else I can do for you? I have the time."
  • Take the Time: Introduce yourself and your role. Welcome new patients or guests to your area.
  • Plan the Time: Tell your guests what to expect. On nursing units, conduct walking rounds and use the Patient Communication Boards.
  • Explain the Time: Explain what you’re doing and why. Keep your guests informed.
  • Account for the Time: Reduce delays. If unavoidable, apologize and provide service recovery.
  • Pick the Time and Place: Practice confidentiality. Keep private conversations private.
  • Take the Time to Say Goodbye or Goodnight: Create a happy ending, and a positive lasting impression.
